What is fatty liver disease aka NAFLD aka NASH?

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (steatosis) is the most common form of chronic liver disease affecting about 25% of the population. As the name implies it is excessive fat stored in liver cells. It is a contributing factor leading to fibrosis, which is stiffening or scarring of the liver tissue. If detected early, the liver can regenerate and repair itself. If left unchecked, it can turn into a more serious condition called cirrhosis, which eventually leads to liver failure or liver cancer.
